Oh my goodness, six hours on a bus and waking up at 3:00 in the morning was totally worth it; first place at my first (and Carroll's first ever) debate meet! ¡W00T! Here's the scoop on debate if you are curious:
~ Four events (can only choose one)
- Congress (AKA - Congressional Homos)
- Lincoln-Douglas
- Public Forum =)
- Policy Debate
~ Congress
- One person against several other students (13-17)
- Debates bills
- Follows parliamentary process
~ Lincoln-Douglas
- One on one
- Students must be able to debate both sides of the issue
~ Public Forum
- Two vs. Two
- Less rigid than policy
- Topic changes every month
- Must be able to debate both sides
- Each round is just over thirty minutes
~ Policy Debate
- Two vs. Two
- Most rigid
- Same topic all year
Anyway, I do political forum with my brother. Our topic was nuclear energy, and for each of our three rounds, we argued con. You find out which side you are, and whether or not you go first by a coin flip. Whoever wins the flip gets to choose either the side they want to argue or whether to go first or second. Then the other team gets to choose the variable that wasn't chosen. Here's the format for a public forum round:
Speaker 1 Constructive (Team A) - 4 min
Speaker 2 Constructive (Team B) - 4 min
Crossfire (Speakers 1 and 2) - 3 min
Speaker 3 Constructive Refutes (Team A) - 4 min
Speaker 4 Constructive Refutes (Team B) - 4 min
Crossfire (Speakers 3 and 4) - 3 min
Speaker 1 Summary - 2 min
Speaker 2 Summary - 2 min
Grand Crossfire (All Speakers) - 3 min
Speaker 3 Final Focus - 1 min
Speaker 4 Final Focus - 1 min
I am the second speaker for our team, so I do the constructive refute and the final focus. My favorite part is definitely my crossfire. I don't participate as much in the grand crossfire, because I'm usually gathering stuff for my final focus.
Congrats also to Panda Guy and his partner DM (AKA: David 2 or Daaaaaavvvvvyyyyy) on third place out of sixteen. They also did political forum.
It was so much fun (watch out Spell Bowl, you've got competition... just kidding...). I mean, I expected it to be fun, but not that fun. But really, who doesn't like an excuse to argue?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha... that most certainly was the best. I can't believe Shoetopia Citizen didn't do Spell Bowl and that Turtles dropped out. You guys would have loved competition last Monday. I really suggest doing it if you can next year!
Yeah, we had lots of people compliment us on matching. Mr. Fretz strongly recommends that we do. We watched a national competition where they matched and thought it looked really sharp.
yeahh elaena said she was gonna do debate [idk if she ended up doing it or not] and she tried getting me to do it w/ her but i didnt really want to bc i did used to want to be a lawyer & i doooo love arguing but idk i have a tendency to get shy in front of people idk [shocker, right? haha] so yeaah.
haha and you guys look EXTRA like twins bc you look alike too. but yeah i can imagine thatd look even better when youre arguing together. good idea!
It's good not to the know the people your debating against. That way, you can totally beat the crap out of them, and never lose any sleep over it. =)

anyyyyways, i think i'd be amazing at debating.
i get so much practice with my family. hahaha
but yeah. i think they should have topics like: stilletos appropriate for work? or something like that.
